There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of going out to the garden to pick breakfast in the morning. Mother Natures abundance is so awe inspiring, it never fails to amaze me.
The cucumbers and tomatoes are in full force now and they are a welcome pop of color to our plates. They remind me of summer’s at home. My dad always threw a fresh cucumber or tomato on our breakfast plate and I loved it! There is NOTHING like them fresh picked from the garden.
I threw some old red skinned potatoes in the garden this year, since they were all starting to spud. Thought why not try it. My first go at growing potatoes ever. 25 potatoes in, a few months of Mama Earth’s nurturing, and we are harvesting dozens a day now. I can’t get over the bounty.
Our son loves to help collect them and has fashioned his own unique potato scrubber from pipe cleaners. It works brilliantly and he is so proud of his cleaning skills.
I have yet to find something as freeing as growing our own food. It’s a kind of freedom many don’t feel in this modern society, and it’s a shame. It’s nearly effortless with a little knowledge, a little work, and a lot of trust in the Earth’s ability to give plants what they need.
I’m so grateful for my Baba, Deda, and father for modeling gardening to me at a young age. It’s invaluable information, and enjoyable work that I’ve found naturally flows through my cells.
I can not wait for the day we get to start collecting eggs from our girls, have ham or bacon from our pigs, and our complete breakfast is from the farm!
