I loved Nirvana as a teenager. I remember being introduced to their music just a couple months before Kurt Cobain’s death.
I was in shock when I heard that he was gone.
I remember wanting to know everything about him. I researched him as only a teenager could in the 90’s, watching MTV and whatever trashy teen mag was out at the time.
I all but forgot about his story in the years that followed, until YouTube (in a way only YouTube can do) “read my mind” and recommended some videos to me.
I went down the rabbit hole once again, but this time I learned so much more!
I learned about his wife, Courtney Love, in a way I hadn’t before. And I started to despise her. Then become intrigued by her. Then I kinda started to love her.
She’s a polarizing character, no doubt, but what I loved about her was her raw honesty and no BS attitude.
She didn’t care what people thought of her and was comfortable being the outcast – the one that didn’t bow to mainstream pressures – and I admired that punk rock attitude.
It’s the same attitude we have to have nowadays if we want to succeed longterm on the farm.
We can’t give a second thought to people who criticize this lifestyle – especially those committed to upholding the mainstream. Cause they are not living in the same universe as us homesteaders. Our mindsets are lightyears apart.
The homesteaders I know are more PUNK ROCK than anyone I’ve ever known.
They are going against the grain.
They are taking chances.
They are living true to their inner compass, and no one else’s.
If that’s not punk rock, I don’t know what is. And honestly, I feel super bad ass to be a part of this community.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure Homesteading is the New Punk Rock!
(So much so that I designed a shirt, cause I wanted it to wear.)
